Protective legislation

Legislation has been introduced in Congress by Rep. Doug Lamborn (R- CO) that would remove federal funding for any school that dispenses the Morning-After-Pil (MAP).  The bill is called The School Children's Protection Act (HR 2458).  At present this bill has 44 sponsors.

Rep.Lamborn stated, "It is morally unacceptable for taxpayers to fund this drug for school age children.  Additionally, these drugs can lead to serious health consequences.  It is everyone's interest to protect our children.

The FDA has issued a ruling earlier this month that the MAP could be given out to children as young as 17 without a prescription.  Aside from the moral considerations, the MAP contains 4 times the amount of hormones as is contained in the birth control pill, which requires a physical exam and a prescription.  HB 2458 is good public policy.
