National Institute of Health

On March 9th, 2009, President Obama issued Executive Order 13505.  This order stated that the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, through the Director of NIH may support and conduct reasonable, scientifically worthy human stem cell research, including human embryonic stem cell research to the extent permitted by law.  The purpose of the NIH guidelines is to implement the Executive Order as it pertains to NIH funding.  NIH funding folks is taxpayer dollar.  This is why the outcry.

The public has until May 26th to comment on the draft guidelines from the National Institute of Health for human stem cell research.  We had better comment on them.  Earlier legislation limited federally funded embryonic research only to frozen embryos conceived through in-vitro fertilization (IVF) that the parents did not want.

The proposed NIH guidelines go much further than previous legislation.  The new guidelines would not restrict research to frozen discarded embryos, but would offer IVF parents the option to donate immediately their newly created embryos for destructive research.

Why are we opposed?  We are opposed because embryos are human beings.  Embryonic stem cell research is no different than the Nazi research on human beings.  It treats innocent human life in a totally utilitarian way.  "In Germany they came for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because, I wasn't a Communist.  Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.  Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Trade Unionist.  Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant.  Then they came for me...and by that time there was no on left to speak up."  Pastor Martin Neimoller
