New charges in suicide of Indian actress following her abortion
Report says boyfriend held aborted baby in his hands while actress bled
By Dave AndruskoA few hours ago, India Today reported still another twist in the sad, sad death of Indian actress Jiah Khan, whose abortion “left her an emotional wreck, possibly leading to her suicide” in June 2013.
Her boyfriend, actor Sooraj Pancholi, has been “charged with abetment to Khan’s suicide under the section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC),” the Mumbai Mirror reported. According to a charge sheet, following a second round of abortifacients, Pancholi “extricated the foetus and disposed of it in the toilet.” (A charge sheet is a formal document of accusation prepared by law-enforcement agencies in India.)
The Mirror obtained access to the charge sheet and reported that
Khan was four months pregnant when she informed Pancholi. According to the publication, Khan obtained some “medicines for medical termination of pregnancy “(chemical abortifacients) but she did not expel a dead baby.
“The couple then approached another doctor and finally a gynaecologist who prescribed a stronger and more effective combination of drugs,” according to reporters Divyesh Singh & Dharmendra Tiwari.
“After taking the medicine, Khan
started haemorrhaging and called Pancholi for help. She was in pain and
needed immediate medical attention but Pancholi allegedly asked her to
wait and called up the gynaecologist for guidance. He was asked to rush
Khan to hospital as the foetus had probably aborted but had not been
expelled from the body, which is probably what led to the
haemorrhaging,” the charge sheet says.
None of this would likely have gone public had Rabia Khan, Jiah Khan’s mother, not asked the Bombay High Court in July 2014 to determine whether her daughter’s death was a suicide or homicide.
The High Court tasked the special crime division of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate.
