Planned Parenthood and It's Allies

Democrats obfuscate and filibuster to shield public from the truth at hearing of Select Investigative Panel on Infant Lives

bensasse2reI believe it is only fair to give the devil his due. As a colleague at National Right to Life pointed out yesterday, the organized pro-abortion movement and kindred Senate/House Democrats, know how to orchestrate their every move to maximum effect.
I have in mind Wednesday’s hearing, convened by the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Select Investigative Panel on Infant Lives, into “The Pricing of Fetal Tissue.”
From the get-go, we saw filibustering coupled with personal attacks, and the always amusing complaint (coming from Democrats) that the inquiry was a “waste of money.”
Literally, after welcoming the guests who would testify, panel Chairman Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) had barely finished her first sentence- “I’m going to yield myself 10 minutes for an opening statement”–before pro-abortion Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) tried unsuccessfully(in the words of USA Today) to “derail Wednesday’s hearing.” Subsequently pro-abortion Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) offered a “parliamentary inquiry,” also unsuccessful.
The hearing was to examine the intersection of Planned Parenthood clinics and so-called Tissue Procurement Companies–the ones that are the middlemen between the abortion clinics and the researchers at some of the most prestigious universities in our nation.
Much attention has focused on how much, if any, “profit” is made. But the testimony of Senator Ben Sasse (R-Ne.) raised larger and more fundamental issues, beginning with the fact that unborn babies are chopped up at abortion clinics and their body parts sold.
The defense of abortion advocates is not that this isn’t happening–although they fervently wish the Center for Medical Progress had not conducted an undercover investigation in which leading Planned Parenthood officials and clinic personnel displayed jaw-dropping insensitivity and cavalier indifference. Their defense is to assert that this is entirely legal.
Sen. Sasse has introduced S.2066, the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. Here’s what he told the committee:
As the committee’s exhibits indicate—web pages exist where a customer can click on a drop-down box listing every organ in the baby’s body for sale. Just click on a brain, a heart, eyes, or scalp and then select your gestation period and then proceed to check out and select your shipment method. We should pause to linger here… and our humanity should be repulsed
Exactly. Our humanity—the humanity we share with those helpless babies–SHOULD be repulsed.
The “who” can be lost when pro-abortion Democrats distract and dissemble, which, of course, is the intention. Sen. Sasse refused to allow this:
Here, on this basic reality, we can and must find agreement: Babies are not the sum of their body parts. Babies are not meant to be bought. Babies are not meant to be sold.
Babies are just that—babies. They’re meant to be welcomed and rejoiced over, held and nurtured.
And I would add, not strip-mined for parts.
