Irish Woman given suspended sentence after aborting baby using drugs purchased on the Internet

By Dave Andrusko

A 21-year-old Northern Ireland woman has been given a three-month sentence suspended for two years, after pleading guilty to buying abortifacients over the Internet to abort her baby.
She plead guilty to “procuring her own abortion by using a poison and of supplying a poison with intent to procure a miscarriage at Belfast Crown Court,” according to the Independent.
She aborted her baby in July 2014, when she was between 10 and 12 weeks pregnant, the Telegraph reported.

Her housemates were “taken back by the seemingly blasé attitude” and then later found a foetus and blood-stained items in a bag outside their home.

They contacted the police who confirmed the foetus belonged to the woman.

She has since had another baby with her boyfriend, according to the Telegraph.
The published accounts are all highly sympathetic, portraying her inability to get an abortion in Northern Ireland as an indictment of the country’s protective abortion laws.
Great Britain’s very liberal 1967 Abortion Law does not apply to Northern Ireland and she told the court she could not raise the funds to go to England for an abortion. Her attorney, Paul Bacon, said his client felt “victimized by the system.”

At that juncture, according to the Telegraph, she “contacted a clinic in England who told her she could take mifepristone and misoprostol – drugs available on the internet.”
Amnesty International, which has become a vocal proponent of abortion, condemned the conviction, saying the country’s government was “violating women and girls’ human rights.”
