National Pro-Euthanasia group trying to pass Physician Assisted Suicide in Nebraska
Editor’s note. The following was provided by Nebraska Right to Life, NRLC’s state affiliate. The national pro-euthanasia group, Compassion & Choices, is helping Nebraska state Senator Ernie Chambers to make good on his promise to get floor debate time for his Priority bill, LB 1056, which would legalize physician- assisted suicide.
The bill was heard in the Judiciary Committee on Feb. 24th. Nebraska Right to Life brought in Wayne Cockfield, a disabled Vietnam veteran and a disability rights activist, who testified against LB 1056 and did several media interviews. Compassion & Choices sent one of their staffers from California to testify for the bill.
This week that same staffer appeared back at the legislature with another C & C advocate as well as Dan Diaz, husband of Brittany Maynard, to lobby senators. Maynard is the young woman with brain cancer who moved to Oregon so she could kill herself under Oregon’s assisted suicide law.
Here are the Senators who voted 4-4 in Judiciary, keeping LB 1056 in committee at this time. However, Compassion & Choices is lobbying for a 5th member to flip their vote to move the bill to the floor.
Please use this formula for Legislative e-mail to contact all members of the Judiciary Committee as well as your own State Senator if they are not on Judiciary and ask that LB 1056 be defeated: bkrist@leg.ne.gov (1st letter of 1st name, full last name @)
If you don’t have e-mail, you can mail them in care of their District No. State Capitol, P.O. Box 94604, Lincoln, NE, 68509-4604.
Compassion & Choices is working hard to pass this bill in a number of states to pass this bill. Last year California joined Oregon, Washington and Vermont in legalizing physician-assisted suicide.
Thank you.
