Late on Friday, we posted that the body of a young child, dubbed “Baby Doe” by the media, had finally been identified and that the boyfriend of the mother of “Bella” had been taken into custody.
Today, Rachelle Bond, the mother of 2-year-old Bella Bond, and her boyfriend Michael McCarthy appeared in court in Boston for their arraignments.

McCarthy, who is charged with killing the little girl, was denied bail. Rachelle Bond, charged as an accessory after the fact, was ordered held on a $1 million cash bond, the Associated Press reported.
The big break in the case, the AP’s Denise Lavoie reported, came when a lifelong friend of McCarthy’s
told police he had lived with the couple and Bella earlier this year but moved out because he was appalled at how they treated her.
According to the friend, the couple had locked Bella inside a closet at least twice for 30 minutes to an hour while she screamed, the prosecutor said. The friend also said both told him Bella was possessed by demons, [Assistant District Attorney David ] Deakin said.
According to Lavoie, when Ms. Bond had not heard any noise, she went in and found Bella “lying on a bed and McCarthy standing over her with his hand near her abdomen.”

Deakin told the AP that Bond said the child’s head was swollen and that she knew the child was dead.
According to Bond, McCarthy said, “She was a demon anyway. IT was her time to die.”
Bella was 3 feet 6 inches tall and weighed about 30 pounds.
“The tiny remains were found June 25 wrapped in a black trash bag, wearing polka dot pants lying next to a zebra blanket along the shore of Deer Island, a narrow peninsula just east of Boston’s Logan Airport,” CNN reported. “Police released photos of the blanket and the polka-dot leggings she was wearing.”

According to CNN, The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children released the composite of the little girl in July.
“The case of the mysterious girl, whose adorable brown eyes and cherubic face — as rendered by forensic artist Christi Andrews and distributed by authorities in Massachusetts — caught the attention of millions.”
“More than 50 million people saw or shared the composite.”

Bella’s body was found by a woman who was walking her dog.
There was some decomposition when her remains were removed from the trash bag.
“Authorities analyzed pollen found on the girl’s pants and blanket and determined that it ‘came from trees and plants around Boston,’ Jake Wark, a spokesman for the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, said last month.”
