Gallup finds “Hillary Clinton’s Favorable Rating One of Her Worst”
By Dave AndruskoHonestly, I laughed out loud when I read the explanation of Gallup’s Andrew Dugan for the precipitous decline in pro-abortion Hillary Clinton’s favorability numbers, the lowest in more than two decades. Then I realized I had completely misread him.
He was not, as I first thought, looking for an excuse to “justify” her abysmal numbers, but rather to put them in context.
Dugan’s point was that the former Secretary of State’s dismal 38% favorability ratings in 1992 [not 2015] “were mostly a product of the public’s lack of familiarity with her, rather than any kind of broad unpopularity.” But “By contrast, her current 41% favorable rating is arguably her worst, given her nearly universal name recognition.”
And to put Clinton’s dismal approval numbers in another comparative context, Dugan added
Her present rating is about as
low as it was in March 2001, during her first few months in office as a
U.S. senator from New York. Perhaps more importantly, it was also after
controversial pardons that her husband, President Bill Clinton, granted
at the end of his presidency, and after the Clintons took furnishings
and other gifts that were White House property when they left.
Ouch!Earlier this week [http://www.nationalrighttolifenews.org/news/2015/09/hillary-clintons-popularity-continues-to-drop/#.VenH8dLBzGc] we discussed the results of a Washington Post poll [www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2015/09/02/hillary-clintons-image-is-struggling-but-shes-no-donald-trump-or-jeb-bush/]which found similar numbers.
In the case of Gallup, 41% said they approved of Clinton while 51% disapproved. The Post found 45% approved while 53% disapproved.
In other words, in the Gallup poll there less disapproval–by 2 points– but also less approval–by 4 points. (By the way, when I dug deeper into the Post poll, I found that 56% of registered voters disapproved.)
And worst yet from Mrs. Clinton’s perspective, unlike the Post story accompanying the results, Dugan’s story did not try to find ways to make Mrs. Clinton’s numbers look better than they actually were.
The only consolation in the Gallup poll for her would be that 74% of Democrats have a favorable opinion of her. But note: that is full 6 points lower than the 80% the Post found among Democrats!
Near the end, Dugan writes
As Clinton continues to field inquiries from the media and government into her email use as secretary of state, her favorable rating among national adults has fallen to near-record lows.
However, as did the Post reporters who analyzed their poll, Dugan implies Clinton remains the odds-on favorite:
But she remains generally liked among Democrats themselves, so it is still an open question as to whether media reports of her email situation will have an effect on her ability to obtain the Democratic presidential nomination.
