NRLC’s “The State of Abortion in the United States”: Part Two of Three

By Dave Andrusko
StateofAbortionOn Tuesday, we posted a story that is important to all pro-lifers. It discussed National Right to Life’s new in-depth analysis, “The State of Abortion in the United States” (“As Nation Observes Roe Anniversary, Right-to-Life Movement Anticipates More Gains,”). Yesterday, today, and Monday we’re analyzing sections of this 37-page overview in detail.
NRL News Today is discussing “The State of Abortion in the United States” because we believe it is by far the most accurate assessment of where we are as of January 2014.
Just a quick reminder…
In addition to the introduction by NRLC President Carol Tobias, there are these major headings:
*Synopsis of U.S. Supreme Court Cases
*Public Opinion & Abortion
*Federal Legislation & Abortion
*State Laws & Abortion
*Abortion in America: A look at the Numbers
*Planned Parenthood: The Nation’s Largest Abortion Provider
*SPECIAL REPORT: Obamacare’s Threat to the born
We talked about “Synopsis of U.S. Supreme Court Cases” and “Public Opinion & Abortion” on Thursday.
The first impression that jumps out at someone who has been in the Movement since the 1970s is how much I learned by reading “Federal Legislation & Abortion” and “State Laws & Abortion.” What makes the sections so helpful is that they not only provide a succinct overview of what is taking place in Congress and the states right now, but offer the historical context for how we arrived at where we are today.
Just as the “Synopsis of U.S. Supreme Court Cases” provides a framework for understanding what the High Court has done since 1973, “Federal Legislation & Abortion: A Look at Federal Law” captures legislative developments going back to 1970.

That enables the reader to appreciate how much—and how deviously–the Obama administration is implementing ObamaCare in a way so as to advance the abortion industry. And also how important H.R. 7 is.
Introduced by Congressmen Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Dan Lipinski (D-Il.), H.R. 7 would permanently prohibit subsidies for abortion and health insurance coverage of abortion in federal programs – both within longstanding federal programs and within the health care law signed by President Obama in 2010. The bill is strongly supported by NRLC and is scheduled to be voted on next week.

Likewise with “State Laws & Abortion: An Overview” which comprehensively explains passage of six categories of pro-life laws:
*Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act
* A Woman’s Right to Know: Ultrasound
* A Woman’s Right to Know: Informed Consent
*Preventing Taxpayer Subsidy for Abortion
*Web-Cam Abortion Bans
*Parental Involvement Laws
An added bonus is that when you go to the report (found at www.nrlc.org/communications/stateofabortion), you’ll find maps showing you where these laws are in effect!

On Monday we’ll talk about
*Abortion in America: A look at the Numbers
*Planned Parenthood: The Nation’s Largest Abortion Provider
*SPECIAL REPORT: Obamacare’s Threat to the born
