“Hero dog” rescues abandoned newborn, baby girl doing well

68-year-old Roger Wilday was walking his German Shepherd when Jade suddenly made a beeline toward some bushes in the Marlborough House Community Park in Birmingham, England. Wilday, a grandfather, beckoned the nine-year-old dog back but, according to the Birmingham Mail, Jade “laid down next to what appeared to be a discarded carrier bag and refused to return to her owner’s side.”

“She wouldn’t come back when I called her and so I had to go over and I saw the bag,” Wilday told the Daily Star. “I walked over and saw a carrier bag – then I saw it move,” Wilday said. “I thought it was a bag of kittens, but then I saw her little arms and a head, and the baby started to cry.’’
The six-pound-baby, who is doing well at Heartlands Hospital, appeared to be about a day old and abandoned about a half hour before Jade discovered her. Her umbilical cord was still attached when she was discovered in the afternoon of October 31.
“I dialed 999 and picked the baby up and within a minute it seemed the like the police and ambulance were here,” Wilday said.

Wilday and his wife Catherine, 65, have four children and five grandchildren, including Liza, a two-week-old granddaughter.

“Jade’s never found anything before. She must have heard the baby crying as these dogs have very good hearing, plus she’s very keen on our [five] grandchildren,” Roger’s wife, Catherine Wilday, told the Birmingham Mail. “Whenever she hears their names she whimpers. She just loves kids.’’
“”She is a hero dog,” Mr. Wilday said. “There was no-one else in the park at the time and it was very cold. If it wasn’t for Jade that baby could have been dead.”

Police are continuing their search for the mother of the baby—who has appropriately been named Jade. “I’d urge her mum, or anyone who knows her, to contact us so we can reunite her with her baby and get her any medical or emotional support she needs,” said Inspector Ian Green.
“Jade is progressing well in hospital and is close to making a full recovery – even now she’s beginning to develop a little personality and it’s heartbreaking her mother is missing out on these special moments,” Green told the BBC.
