Coat Hanger Pendants & A New Study From Chile On Maternal Deaths Associated With Illegal Abortion

For those of us who are pro-life, we are all very familiar with the very touching and charming Precious Baby Feet pins sold by Heritage House for $1.95 each.  Depicting an unborn child's precious little feet at approximately 10 weeks, it is a statement of the unborn child's humanity.

Recently, pro-abortion advocates came up with a similar idea in jewelry, meant to make their own statement. It was a (are you ready for this?) a Coat Hanger Pendent! A young abortion clinic escort tweeted about her charming coat hanger pendent, which she purchased from DCAbortionFund for the bargain price of $34.95. She then gave the link and encouraged others to treat themselves to the stylish jewelry with a message.  Yes, it was a little coat hanger on a necklace, promoting one of pro-abortion's favorite propaganda tools; the asserted numbers of women who died from illegal coat hanger abortions.

So, let's take a look at this assertion by pro-abortion advocates, which we have been being propagandized with for decades.

Dr. Bernard Nathanson, one of the world's leading abortionists (who actually aborted his own child) wrote an article "Confession of an Ex-Abortionist" in which he outlined three chief tactics which he and his cohorts used to sell the idea of legal abortion in the U.S.  1.) "We persuaded the media that the cause of permissive abortion was a liberal, enlightened, sophisticated one. Knowing that if a true poll were taken, we would be soundly defeated, we simply fabricated the results of fictional polls. We announced to the media that we had taken polls and that 60% of Americans were in favor of permissive abortion. This is the tactic of the self-fulfilling lie."    2.)  "We systematically vilified the Catholic Church and its 'socially backward ideas' and picked on the Catholic hierarchy as the villain in opposing abortion. This theme was played endlessly. We fed the media such lies as 'we all know that opposition to abortion comes from the hierarchy and not from most Catholics' and 'Polls prove time and again that most Catholics want abortion law reform'.  The media drum-fired all this into the American people, persuading them that anyone opposing permissive abortion must be under the influence of the Catholic hierarchy and that Catholics in favor of abortion are enlightened and forward-looking. An inference of this tactic was that there were no non-Catholic groups opposing abortion. The fact that other Christian as well as non-Christian religions were  (and still are) monolithically opposed to abortion was constantly suppressed, along with pro-life atheists' opinions."     NOTE: My personal apologies to all non-Catholics for believing all these years that you were not behind us Catholics in our fight against abortion.  Tactic Number 3.)  This was the denigration and suppression of all scientific evidence that life begins at conception. "A favorite pro-abortion tactic is to insist that the definition of when life begins is impossible; that the question is a theological or moral or philosophical one, anything but a scientific one."

FINALLY    Dr. Nathanson went on to say, that a truthful poll of opinion then, in the 1960's, would have actually revealed that most Americans were against permissive abortion!  Yet, within five years of founding NARAL in 1968, we had convinced the U.S. Supreme Court to issue the decision which legalized abortion throughout America in 1973 and produced virtual abortion on demand up to birth.  Dr. Nathanson went on to explain how they aroused enough sympathy to sell permissive abortion by ratcheting up the actual number  of illegal abortions done annually in the U.S, from 100,00 to 1,000,000!

Now of all the propaganda lies we've been hearing from the abortion crowd, the one we've heard the most is the familiar coat hanger assertion; that if abortion were outlawed, women would be forced once again, into "back-alley abortions" where presumably they would be aborted with a dirty coat-hanger.  This has been a very visual and visceral tool, which has struck fear into women, as well as their partners and family for decades - thus the lovely and terrifying coat-hanger pendent was designed and marketed in order to keep this fear in the public eye.

Now a new ground-breaking abortion study from Chile, published in the scientific journal "PLosOne", has found that illegal abortion is NOT associated with maternal mortality.  Before 1989 abortion was legal in Chile; after 1989 it became illegal. The author of the controversial new study explains what happened to women's health.

Dr. Elard S. Koch, an epidemiologist from the Department of Family Medicine, Faculty of Medicine at the University of Chile, and the lead author of the study said:  "The Chilean study is the first in-depth analysis of a large time series, year by year, of maternal deaths and their determinants, including years of education, per capita income, total fertility rate, birth order, clean water supply, sanitation, and childbirth delivery by skilled attendants, including simultaneously different historical policies."

Finally, Dr. Koch went on to say, that the study confirmed "abortion prohibition is not related to overall rates of maternal mortality. In other words, making abortion illegal does not increase maternal deaths: it is a matter of scientific fact in our study"

Gee!  I guess Chileans will not be purchasing any coat-hanger pendents to hang around their necks, any time soon.
