S.C. Women Must Wait A Day Before An Abortion, If Bill Passes

Women seeking an abortion in South Carolina would have to wait at least 24 hours after their ultrasound under abill given initial approval Wednesday by a House subcommittee. The measure would increase the waiting time from an hour to aday. Proponents said it would bring South Carolina in line with other states that have waiting periods and give women time to reflect on the decision. Critics said requiring two trips creates a burden, especially for poor, rural women.

Teenage Girls Having Repeat Abortions Are on Rise

The number of teenage girls in the UK having multiple abortions is on the rise, researchers reveal. Repeat abortions in those under 20 years of age have climbed by 68 per cent over the past 15 years, the new figures show. Terminations are also increasing among teenage mums, with 42 per cent more girls failing to learn from their first pregnancy. The results, published in the international journal Contraception, show that repeat abortions have risen steadily from 1991 to 2007. The number of teenagers presenting for repeat abortions has increased from 81 in 1,000 in 1991 to 134 in 1,000 in 2007. Meanwhile, the number of teenage mums later asking for an abortion rose from 80 in 1,000 in 1991 to 115 in 1,000 by 2007.

MLK Relative Urges Fight for Anti-Abortion Agenda

Alveda King's message to a crowd of hundreds of anti-abortion advocates Saturday in Lombard Illinois was blunt, even graphic. Seeking to draw connections between the civil rights movement and the battle to end legalized abortion, the niece of Martin Luther King Jr. displayed images of aborted children on a projection screen and spoke in detail about regrets over her own two abortions. "Each of you is a warrior for life," King told the crowd, assembled for the SpeakOut Illinois Conference at the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center hotel. "Abortion is not a civil right. Abortion is genocide."

From the UK: Government Needs 'Two-Child' Limit Population Control

Jonathon Porritt chairs the UK's Sustainable Development Commission which explains why his elevator doesn't go all the way to the top floor.

Couples who have more than two children are being "irresponsible" by creating an unbearable burden on the environment, the government's green adviser has warned. Jonathon Porritt, who chairs the government's Sustainable Development Commission, says curbing population growth through contraception and abortion must be at the heart of policies to fight global warming. He says political leaders and green campaigners should stop dodging the issue of environmental harm caused by an expanding population. A report by the commission, to be published next month, will say that governments must reduce population growth through better family planning.

Protesters Rally on Proposed Abortion Clinic

Activists from both sides [sic] of the abortion divide met in a noisy, sometimes heated, confrontation Saturday outside the Madison clinic that may soon provide second-trimester abortions. About 800 [abortion protesters] from around Wisconsin marched to the Madison Surgery Center at 1 S. Park St. from Library Mall. State and national leaders of the anti-abortion movement speaking at Library Mall urged the marchers to hold UW Hospital officials accountable if the clinic begins to offer second-trimester abortions. The clinic is jointly run by UW Hospital, its doctor group and Meriter Hospital. The UW Hospital and Clinics Authority Board is scheduled to meet Wednesday to give direction to hospital employees who sit on the board of the surgery center.
