Abortion Funding Decision Least Popular So Far

Obama's Abortion Funding Decision Least Popular So Far, Gallup Say

Latest Gallup Poll Shows Majority of Americans Disapprove of Obama Decision to Fund Overseas Abortion Providers President Obama's Repeal of Pro-Life Mexico City Policy Garners 58% Public Disapproval Ratings, Highest of Decisions Polled

Today the president of the Susan B. Anthony List commented on this week's Gallup Poll results that found 58% of Americans disapprove of President Barack Obama's decision to repeal the pro-life Mexico City Policy and send American tax dollars to overseas abortion providers:

"This week's Gallup poll revealed the truth that President Obama's decision to roll back the commonsense Mexico City Policy is out of step with the attitudes of the majority of American taxpayers," said Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. "Of the top seven Presidential decisions polled by Gallup, President Obama's choice to send taxpayer dollars to overseas abortion providers was by far the least popular. Fifty-eight percent of Americans disapprove of taxpayer-funded subsidies for abortion abroad, and those sentiments extend to funding abortion here at home. I strongly urge President Obama to abandon the radical abortion bailout agenda. Americans want him to endorse policies that actually reduce abortion, not promote it at the taxpayer's expense."

The Jan. 30-Feb. 1 USA Today/Gallup poll asked Americans to say whether they approve or disapprove of seven specific actions Obama has taken as president. Of the seven actions, Obama's decision to repeal the Mexico City Policy garnered the highest disapproval ratings at 58%.

The Susan B. Anthony List's Stop the Abortion Bailout! Campaign (http://www.stoptheabortionbailout.com), has sent over 72,000 letters to the U.S. Senate advocating the preservation of federal abortion funding restrictions. The campaign's goal is to secure the 41 votes necessary to sustain a filibuster against measures promoting federal taxpayer funding of abortion.

President Reagan first established the pro-life Mexico City Policy in 1984. Named for the city where it was announced, the policy declared that American tax dollars would not fund international organizations involved in performing or promoting abortions abroad. After its rollback by President Clinton, President G.W. Bush reinstated the policy as his first executive order. President Obama reversed the policy through an executive order on Friday, January 23, 2009.
