Media Bias

Surprise, surprise, TIME magazine folds under pro-abortion pressure

By Dave Andrusko
NancyGibbs4reWe all knew it was a matter of not whether but when TIME magazine would fold like a cheap suit. To dare to poke fun at “feminists” could only incur the wrath of the usual humorless suspects–Amy Poehler, Cecile Richards, etc.
And the only appropriate response is—what else?—to grovel.

So what brought down the Feminist Establishment on poor Katy Steinmetz?
As it has in the past TIME asked its readers what inanity ought to be voted off the Island in 2015? Specifically, Steinmetz said it’s the kind of word that

If you hear that word one more time, you will definitely cringe. You may exhale pointedly. And you might even seek out the nearest the pair of chopsticks and thrust them through your own eardrums like straws through plastic lids. What word is this? You tell us.
Given a bunch of choices, “feminist” lapped the field. Nearly half (48%) choose “feminist.” Of course such effrontery would not be allowed to stand.
Sure enough, after NARAL et al. send out an email telling its shock troops to harass TIME, the editor, Nancy Gibbs, quickly said ‘no mas.’

It was the digital equivalent of one of those prison of war films where the soldier confesses to his (and his country’s) numerous and egregious (and wholly imaginary) sins. Gibbs, a graceful writer, is reduced to a ritualistic apology for offending the Sisterhood.

Editor’s Note:
TIME apologizes for the execution of this poll; the word ‘feminist’ should not have been included in a list of words to ban. While we meant to invite debate about some ways the word was used this year, that nuance was lost, and we regret that its inclusion has become a distraction from the important debate over equality and justice.
Did Gibbs say, “Execution”?! Oh, “of this poll,” not Steinmetz. Whew! That was close.
Of course Steinmetz offered up her own mea culpa for her inexcusable behavior (that is, humor and heterodoxy). First, she tried tweeting, “The inclusion is responding to trends in the media, not feminism itself.”

Not good enough. She needed to prostrate herself to fully expiate her transgressions against NARAL and kindred free-thinking “liberals.” Which, of course, she did posthaste.
One other quick thing. Another pro-abortion source “explained” why the results of the TIME poll were invalid. They were not spontaneous.

Meaning? Some websites had encouraged people to choose “feminist,” they wrote.
Now think about that for a second. The Abortion/Feminist Establishment grinds out organized protests like meat packing factories do sausage. Spontaneous? Please.
The lesson? The slightest deviation from goodthink (yes, that is from “1984”) must be punished, the perpetrator shamed into apologizing for her excursion into crimespeak (also from “1984”).
That’s what I like most about our benighted opposition. Their willingness to poke fun at themselves and their joy at hearing contrary opinions.
