Brain Death, is the Donor really dead, or just dead enough?

Are you aware that the definition of death was changed in the early 70's, from "biological" (the absence of heartbeat and respiration) to "brain death" for the sole purpose of organ donation? This new definition reminded some pro-lifers of the early 70's, when the issue of killing had to be seperated from the abortion procedure in order to be accepted by the public. This was effectively done by framing the issue of abortion with the word "choice". So too, in the brain death debate, the issue of killing was framed by the word "gift". Do you think profoundly injured human beings should have their organs donated on the basis of brain death, even though their hearts are beating? Do you think we are becoming a utilitarian society?
