Pro-abortion “icon” Wendy Davis announces bid for Texas Governor

When I sat down to write this post, the least best-kept secret in American politics was about to go public: pro-abortion “icon” Texas state Senator Wendy Davis was about to officially announce that she is running for governor.

Talk about a magical carpet ride. Ever since she launched an 11-th hour, 11-hour-long filibuster against an important pro-life bill, Davis has been treated like, well, like a pro-abortion icon. It didn’t matter that her filibuster only caused pro-life Gov. Rick Perry to call a second special session at which time SB5 passed comfortably. Davis had become (here it comes) a “symbol.”
For Davis the trick is to milk her considerably pro-abortion credentials for all they are worth at the same time she positions herself as a well-rounded candidate. That no one knew her from Eve until the filibuster gets politely glossed over.

The election is, of course, not until next year, but the campaign has already started. Davis wants to have it both ways—benefit from the gobs of pro-abortion money that will come from out of the state but act as if she can’t talk about education enough.

Texas Right to Life, NRLC’s state affiliate, is having none of that. It will run a sixty-second no-nonsense radio ad, reportedly beginning this weekend. Having just listened to it, here is the text:

“Nothing is more precious than our children. This past summer, Republicans and Democratic state legislators passed limits on second and third trimester abortions when babies are fully formed. Extremist groups protested this new law and rallied around abortion zealot State Senator Wendy Davis. Wendy Davis opposes any limits on abortion and even called late term abortions ‘sacred ground.’

“But abortion is not sacred; babies feel the pain of abortion. That’s why state lawmakers from both parties came together to protect our most vulnerable children.

“Wendy Davis puts late term abortion ahead of our faith, our families, and our Texas values. Wendy Davis believes terminating babies even after 1/2 way through the pregnancy, is okay. She is wrong on life, wrong for our children, and wrong for Texas.”

Davis competition is likely pro-life Republican Attorney General Greg Abbott. Abbott, who spoke at last summer’s NRLC convention in Dallas, was appointed a justice on the Texas Supreme Court by George W. Bush, who was Texas governor before becoming a two-term President.
