Ultrasounds and Babies and Bubbles
By Dave AndruskoIt’s one thing to write about what unnerves pro-abortionists and quite another to have a first-hand experience yourself with something that sends chills of fear up and down their spines.
You can read various estimates of how many abortion-minded women will change their minds, but the simple truth is that ultrasounds have incredible powers of persuasion. We see ultrasounds on television commercials, on billboards, in print advertising, in photo albums—they seem to be everywhere. “A baby’s first photo” is a good description.
Even so, when a woman who is the least bit ambivalent about her decision to abort sees that bundle of energy—moving and gesturing and smiling—this view of HER little one changes the moral calculus. No wonder the Planned Parenthoods of this world fight any law that gives women a chance to take one last look at the little one they are about to abort.
I was at work yesterday when I got a text from my daughter-in-law, Jean. She’d sent me the ultrasound of our second grandchild, now about 32 weeks along in his development.
I’d seen ultrasounds of Ethan Gabriel before, just as I had of Emma Grace, our first grandchild. But there was something in this marriage of almost magical complexity—a beautiful picture created by an ultrasound machine send to my amazing Android—that awakened in me an appreciation for the marvelous journey that is prenatal development.
To be sure, an added benefit was that he seemed to be blowing bubbles, just as he be doing outside his mother’s body in a couple of months. Another reminder that birth is just a change in location.
On a side note, I wonder if I got real close, would he be able to hear me asking him to stop kicking so much so his mother can get some sleep?
