“Miracle Baby” born with half a heart now thriving; mother had rejected abortion
By Dave AndruskoAnother amazing story of a mother who is “offered” an abortion when she discovers her child has an anomaly but chooses life.
In this case Scarlett Crowther, aptly described as a Miracle Baby, is now a healthy ten month old who survived two major surgeries, including a seven- and-a- half hour operation when she was only five days old.
Rebecca Turner, Scarlett’s mother, learned when she was 20 weeks pregnant that her baby had a rare defect– hypo-plastic left heart syndrome where the left side of the heart does not develop in the womb. Scarlett essentially had half a heart.
Five days after Scarlett’s birth last June, doctors at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Merseyside, England put an artificial tube inside the baby to help blood flow to her heart.
“I couldn’t believe it when she was allowed home six days later,” Turner told Daily Mail newspaper
At eight months, another major surgery: surgeons “attached a vein from her neck to her heart in an eight-and-a-half hour op,” according to the Daily Mail. That operation took eight and one-half hours.
Ten months later, Turner is describing her child as a little fighter. “When I hold her now I can’t believe how healthy and happy she is. She is my miracle baby.”
