Texas woman dies, has baby, comes back to life
By Dave AndruskoWhat an amazing story–technically a postmortem delivery of a baby who, three months later is thriving.
36 weeks pregnant, Erica Nigrelli, an English teacher at a high school in Missouri City, Texas, collapsed in a co-worker’s classroom.
She told WMUR television that “Apparently I told her ‘I feel very faint,’ and I put my head down and essentially just passed out.” Her husband, Nathan, also a teacher at Elkins High School, came in, and saw his wife on the floor: Erica’s heart had stopped!
Co-workers kept her alive until paramedics arrived, using CPR and a defibrillator to try to jump start her heart. They rushed Erica to the hospital where doctors performed an emergency C-Section to delivery baby Elayna. And because Erica’s heart was not beating, technically it was a postmortem delivery!
“There were two lives that were hanging in the balance the whole time,” Nathan told WMUR, adding that he later learned that his wife had an undetected heart defect.
“She’s just a baby, a normal baby,” said Erica, who now has a pacemaker that should allow her to see Elayna grow up. Elayna now weighs 9 pounds.
“Doctors said she’s growing and thriving.”
