Law to legalize “voluntary euthanasia” introduced in California
Editor’s note. The following alert was sent to NRL News Today by the California ProLife Council, NRLC’s state affiliate.
California ProLife Council, working in conjunction with a coalition of life-affirming groups, has defeated California Assisted Suicide proposals in the past. But euthanasia advocates have promised to be particularly aggressive this coming year.
State Senators Bill Monning and Lois Wolk are currently trying to talk other legislators into co-sponsoring this dangerous measure. It would legalize ‘voluntary euthanasia’ in California.
Medicine would intentionally be used to kill patients.
This measure will be given a number after cosponsors are added. It appeals strongly to the emotions of those who have lost loved ones.
But in every jurisdiction where this is allowed, abuses and killings by those who are heirs; killing of the non-terminal; “doctor shopping” to find ‘authorization’ for killing a clearly unaware and dependent patient–all these practices and more have proven that it is impossible to keep this ‘voluntary’. It appears such laws often benefit the third party ‘survivor’.
Under this proposal it is the “assistant” in assisted suicide that will no longer be under legal constraint or investigation.
California ProLife’s Brian Johnston has been deeply involved in combating each of the previous proposals in California.
He says, “You must reme
mber that this is not about helping comfort or alleviate pain for an ill or dying person, that’s what Mother Teresa did. That’s what good hospice care offers. This is about killing that patient instead.”
In Netherlands, Belgium, Oregon and Washington abuses appear regularly, but only because someone messes up so sadly the abuse cannot be ignored. The essential purpose of these laws is to simply halt investigations.
Johnston, who has been a California Commissioner on Aging and hospice volunteer, wants all pro-life individuals prepared for the onslaught of propaganda for “compassionate killing.”
His documentary and book, Death as a Salesman, is recognized as one of the definitive handbooks in the battle against assisted suicide.
