Sandra Fluke moves closer to run for Congress
A Georgetown college law student when she came to national prominence two years ago, Fluke has continued her activism for Democratic Party issues since the end of the 2012 campaign. Her Twitter page shows support for a higher minimum wage, support for more minorities and homosexuals in public office, and greater government spending on education.
After initially coming to fame after testifying to Congress about why taxpayers should provide contraception for American women, Fluke was criticized by talk show host Rush Limbaugh. Limbaugh called Fluke a “slut,” and after a firestorm apologized for his words. Fluke subsequently campaigned for President Obama during his re-election campaign, where she drew small and lackluster crowds. She also spoke at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The race to replace Waxman is likely to include several candidates, including State Senator Ted Lieu. Lieu introduced Senate Bill 1172, which makes restorative sexual therapy for minors illegal. He said the bill was intended as an “attack on parental rights...because we don’t want to let parents harm their children.”
